Train to pakistan by Khushwant Singh

Excerpt from the book:-
" Muslims said the Hindus had planned and started the killing. According to the Hindus, the Muslims were to blame. The fact is, both sides killed. Both shot and stabbed and speared and clubbed. Both tortured. Both raped."
My view on the book:
Before reading this book, I have read few years ago, that, during India-Pakistan partition, millions of people lost their lives while going to their 'respective countries'.
The story of this book revolves around a village named Mano Majra and the people in it. This book was a good reading experience. It showcases how religion divided people. One could see how deep the clutches of religion are embedded in our society.
The main characters as per me are Iqbal singh who comes to the village with a noble cause. Juggut singh, a dacoit, a badmash as everyone calls. Hukum chand, a magistrate who finds solace for his conscience by getting drunk, he is also a pedophile. Meet singh and Imam baksh, elderly people of the village with good hearts.
It shows how both the sides blame each other for the killings and resort to "tit for tat"...blood for blood...murder for murder...rape for rape.
Final take:-
For those who want to read books on Independence & Pre-Independence period and of simple language,I will recommend this book.
